Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
